Event Overview

We all have unconscious bias in decision making. The problem is that we don’t know where our unconscious bias lies. Unchecked unconscious bias at work could be detrimental to your firm.
Recruitment and promotion are two areas in law firms where the negative impacts of unconscious bias can be seen, and in particular towards female lawyers and those in management roles.
Diversity is a key agenda for many law firms today, but many are failing to put it into practice. This is despite research that continually shows diversity benefits the bottom line.
Amanda Ferguson and Melissa Penfold from Hudson’s talent management team will discuss the hidden flaw that lie in all of us, how to bridge the unconscious bias gap and how to break the cycle of bias in your firm and limit its effects on your decision making and leadership.

Amanda Ferguson, Senior Consultant, Hudson Talent Management

Amanda has enjoyed a long association with Hudson Queensland with broad experience in a range of senior leadership roles across recruitment and HR Consulting. Prior to joining Hudson's coaching team, Amanda was Practice Director for both the Human Resources and ICT recruitment practices in Brisbane where she successfully led, coached and developed recruitment teams to achieve and exceed recruitment activity and budget targets.

Amanda’s background also includes several years experience as a Client Services Director, most recently in a national role servicing the Mining and Energy sector. She has led delivery teams in the supply of HR consulting and recruitment services for a number of our key clients including Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, QGC, and ConocoPhillips on a national basis.

More recently, as a Career Coach, Amanda has held the role of Lead Coach, Queensland for the Australia Post account as well as Senior Coach to the BHP Billiton Account where she has supported a range of candidates across the Executive HR, Sales and Marketing, Finance and Engineering disciplines through transition.

With a track record of over 400 successful coaching assignments, Amanda has successfully engaged individuals to achieve behavioural change, and personal development across a range of environments.
Melissa Penfold, Consultant, Hudson Talent Management
Melissa is a Registered Psychologist with 4 years experience in career transition and leadership development, scientific research and talent management. 

Melissa balances her experience working with people from diverse backgrounds with evidence-based practices to help organisations from all industries and sectors. By using psychology-based intel, Melissa works with organisations through a range of different areas of the employee’s lifecycle to increase the productivity and performance of their individual contributors, develop their leadership capability and profitability and provide support during career transition periods.

Melissa has experience working collaboratively with large multi-disciplinary organisations and government entities which include Aurecon, Powerlink, BHP, Boral, Onesteel, Viadux, Coles, Airbus, Brisbane City Council, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), and Queensland Health.
