Our first Leading Your Firm livestream event for FY16 brings together legal sector technology experts to talk through the key issues firms face when looking to invest in and upgrade IT systems and infrastructure.

Facilitated by Warrick McLean, CEO, Coleman Greig Lawyers and ALPMA National Board Projects Director, our expert panel, James Boocock, Thomson Reuters, Nicholas Carr, BOABIT and Richard Chew, Sparke Helmore Lawyers will talk through the stumbling blocks firms face and how to resolve these to invest in the right IT with the right contracts in place to move the business forward.

Richard Chew, Partner, Intellectual Property and Technology, Sparke Helmore Lawyers
Richard is an experienced IP & technology lawyer focusing on commercial transactions and technology, telecommunications and outsourcing matters in Australia and Asia Pacific. He works on commercial transactions, outsourcing, IT and commercial telecommunications arrangements, technology and IP commercialisation, strategic procurement and sourcing, vendor management and negotiated company and business mergers and acquisitions across a range of industries. His clients range from small and medium enterprises to the largest ASX-listed companies, and operate in food, liquor, retail, telecommunications and technology services industries. Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2015 notes Richard is “praised for his ‘ability to understand IT concepts and translate them readily into layman’s terms’”.
Nicholas Carr, Managing Director, BOABIT
With almost two decades of experience in the IT industry, Nicholas Carr has more recently spent his time focused on delivering technology solutions for the legal industry. A passionate educator, Nicholas has written many articles for both the Law Society of NSW Journal and Law Institute of Victoria Journal helping provide a clearer understanding of technology, their pitfalls and common mistakes creating disruption in law firms. Speaking at vendor conferences and the Law Societies, Nicholas enjoys sharing his experiences and offering advice on how to achieve maximum efficiency without over spending. The son of a barrister, Nicholas got his first glimpse of the legal landscape working as a gopher in his father's chambers at the age of 15 before studying and working in IT. Twenty years later, Nicholas was working as the CIO to LEAP Legal Software, Infotrack and Smokeball. Nicholas has a vision to deliver all of the products and services a law firm requires to operate for a fixed monthly cost no matter the size or location. As nobody likes surprises, least of all barristers and solicitors, to minimise the exposure to costly IT services BOAB IT was born.
James Boocock, General Manager for Small Firm Solutions, Thomson Reuters
James has a longstanding career within the legal services sector as a commercial leader and business change agent. He has a wealth of knowledge across product development, technology operations and creating innovative environments to drive change within legal firms through practice management solutions. James is intimately familiar with traditional information business models and has significant experience in the changing landscape of the global legal profession in particular in the UK and USA as well as Australia.
